Enter Opium Sabbah, son of legendary & internationally-acclaimed Asian Massive producer/DJ & global fusion pioneer, Cheb I Sabbah.
As much as we owe props to the Hyphy movement for putting Oakland on the map, Conscious Hip Hop is also alive and well in the Bay area and seems more urgent than ever as we find ourselves staring down the barrel of a potential Trump-presidency and with it, a return to the dark ages.
That’s where Opium comes in.
Opium‘s new album, Freedom is Free, which was produced by Chebi, (who passed away much too early in 2013 RIP, Chebi), hits hard with its message of Anti-Imperialism and turns it eyes on the United States’ “War on Terror”, which seems to target our Civil Rights more than its intended targets. The album pulls no punches and lays it out on the line as Opium paints a portrait of the global crisis we are faced with today as seen through the eye of an American MC with Algerian Sephardic roots.
It’s “East meets West – Global Fusion meets Revolutionary Hip-Hop”
The album also features a ridiculous Who’s Who of the international World Dance community from famous Tunisian singer, MC Rai; to Punjabi Hip-Hop artist, Seti X, & classical Indian violinist, Violinder, with remixes by Karsh Kale, Midival Punditz, and Jayant Luthra.
Aside from Karsh’s remix, this is my favorite track on the album and it’s available for exclusive download from All The Machines.
Download it now, your machines will thank you!
